Friday, April 10, 2009 - final destination - Padua, Italy. Padua is outside of Venice, about 30 minutes, and so we decided to base ourselves here for 2 nights. Rooms are also a bit less, but still expensive...we are traveling with 7 people so what do I expect really? Anyway - our hotel was right outside of Padua's Basilica of St. Anthony. Another amazing building.

Silas went crazy over the pigeons. Here is a picture of Syd, but notice Silas in the background and the pigeon flying up right in front of those 2 girls...fortunately they thought Silas was adorable running around and didn't mind the flying pigeon!
We were quite tired upon our arrival in Padua (who wouldn't be after waking up before 2am)! The kids were thrilled to finally be at the hotel...but we needed to get something to eat....so we freshened up a bit and then headed out to find some supper. We walked, and walked, and walked some more in search of some place we read about in our guidebook. We came to the Palazzo della Ragione (a great hall) that once held medieval law courts. We also walked in and around Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza della Frutta which are the market squares. There was plenty of raw meat on sale....I almost lost my appetite completely....the smell. We still hadn't found what we were looking for. The kids were extremely tired and hungry and crabby by this point...not to mention mommy was too! So we walked and walked some more...retracing our previous route...sort of.
We came across a lot of these little "Guido cars" as we call them. These little guys were used for everything - I think because they can navigate down the narrow streets much easier than normal vehicles.

Ellen - walking in ITALY! The family, walking.....walking....one little one tagging behind! You don't know how many times I turn around and do the count; 1, 2, 3, 4 okay all the kids are accounted for...then grab an arm or a hand and make them stick with me! Thanks Ellen - for putting up with us...and being such a help with keeping track of the kids. Normally, we have a stroller - but we opted to do this trip without...so tired legs keep on walking...

So back to our supper searching....finally after striking out a few times...we ended up back to the Basilica square and ate at pizzeria we had walked past earlier...argh! Fortunately the pizza was great! Or was it that we were just SOOOO hungry by this point?

I remember basically living off of pizza & gelato while in Italy. I had good, bad & ugly. Glad you found some good stuff!
