Berchtesgaden and The "Eagle's Nest"

Friday evening Jeremy and I decided that we wanted to do something/go somewhere this weekend (since Monday was another holiday in Germany) and the weather was suppose to be nice (finally). We decided on Berchtesgaden (which is in the southeastern tip of Germany - near Salzburg, Austria). We found a hotel via the internet - and got up early (but not too early) on Saturday morning (May 22) and headed out.

We arrived in Berchtesgaden (the town) and wound our way up the mountain to Obersalzberg where we parked the van and found out about tickets and such to go up to Kehlsteinhaus - or as it is better known - Eagle's Nest. This place was built and given to Hilter for his 50th birthday. The views are suppose to be magnificent. From Obersalzberg you have to take a bus up to the Kehlsteinhaus parking lot. The road is considered to be a great feat of engineering as it was blasted out of solid rock and completed in about 13 months. The drive up is also suppose to have amazing views - it is so steep - I was sort of glad it was foggy and I couldn't see how far up we were and how far down, down was!

From the parking lot you must walk through a tunnel and at the end of the tunnel is an elevator that will take you up to Eagle's Nest.

At the top there was SNOW!! Silas was pretty excited about that. It was pretty chilly up there too. And the view - well lets just say we were so high up we were in the clouds!!!

There is a restaurant up at Eagle's Nest - and we found ourselves a table and had some lunch. It was warm in there, and was nice to sit and relax - make our trip up there worthwhile - since we struck out on the view. We bought a few postcards too - so we know what it is suppose to look like on a nice clear day!
