When we first arrived at Wartburg Castle it was lightly raining and a bit cool outside. We decided to stop by the little wurst shop along the roadside for some wurst to help warm us up a bit! YUM!!!
Martin Luther lived in the Wartburg castle from May of 1521 to March of 1522. He occupied this room (pictured below) that is now known as the Lutherstube. It is here, in this room, that Luther translated the Bible from Greek to German. The wall behind the green furnace is said to have been where Luther threw his ink well at the devil. Notice how the wall has been chipped away by pilgrims; who over the centuries were wanting a piece of history. This area is now blocked off to preserve history. The only piece of furniture that is original to Luther's time is the footstool, which is actually made of a whale bone (you can see it in the second picture). Pretty interesting to think Luther used that actual foot stool to rest his feet while translating the Bible! Actually made me think a bit about Jonah :)

Silas and I hung out at the bottom and waited for the others to return.
The kids enjoyed just playing around on the grounds and climbing on whatever they could. We had packed a lunch and took time to eat before heading out.
